On the last episode, we discussed… Exercising and moving your body with love. On this episode, we’re going to discuss how to… Declutter your closet.

YAY! This is a really fun one. I’m excited to get into it…

STEP 5. DECLUTTER YOUR CLOSET.

When you look into your closet, what do you see, and how do you feel?

Every piece of clothing in your closet is sending a message to you. What kinds of messages are you getting?

It’s always fascinating when I ask my clients this question.

Once, I had a client who looked into her closet and she realized that all of her clothes looked really “corporate.” Her closet was full of black pant suits, blazers, and lots of very sensible shoes. She had tons of clothes that she never really liked. All kinds of stuff that she got because she thought she “needed” to look a certain way at work.

However, she wasn’t working in a corporate setting anymore. She had started her own business. She was in a totally different chapter of her career. But her closet didn’t reflect this change. Her closet was still stuck in the past. She told me, “No wonder I feel so stressed when I’m getting dressed in the morning—none of my clothes feel like me!”

She revamped her closet and felt SO much better.

I had another client who looked into her closet and noticed that all of her blouses had a very high neckline. Buttons all the way up to her neck, so that her chest was completely covered. Then she remembered that, as a teenager, she’d been teased and she had received lots of unwanted attention from boys because of her boobs. So then, over the years, almost unconsciously, she had started covering herself up. She covered her chest. But she also covered and hid herself in other ways, too, like not always sharing her opinions, like being a people-pleaser and avoiding conflict. She owned all of these very modest, prim, high neckline tops—not because she particularly “liked” them, but because she was anxious about experiencing the teasing all over again.

So, it’s very interesting to dig into our closets, because our clothes tell a story about the experiences we’ve had in the past, and what we believe about ourselves, and the world.

12 years ago, if you had looked into my closet, you would have seen tons of beige and gray and black. No sparkles. No bright colors, like I wear today. You would see lots of blazers that I thought I “needed” to wear at work. And lots of baggy sweat pants for wearing at home. You would also see lots of different sizes of clothing, because my weight was constantly changing, so I was afraid to get rid of anything, because who knows what size my body will be next week or next month?

I hated getting dressed in the morning. It didn’t feel exciting. It was always a big chore. And really stressful, because nothing ever fit quite right.

I kept telling myself, “Later, once I lose weight, THEN I will go shopping and get beautiful clothes that I love.” I told myself those words over and over. But for several years, the weight didn’t come off, so I never went shopping… and I was stuck with all of these icky, uncomfortable clothes that I hated.

Think about that. Every single morning, I was putting clothes onto my skin that I hated. I was literally putting hate onto my body, directly onto my skin. Does that sound healthy? Is that something that’s going to create positive feelings and habits throughout the day? NOPE. When your closet is filled with clothes that you don’t like, that has a direct impact on your mood and your health.

This is why I urge all of my clients to declutter their closets.

Not “someday later” once your body is a different size or shape. I want you to do this decluttering project right now. Today.

Get into your closet. Open up the drawers. Dump everything onto your bed. Go through the big pile. Get rid of anything that makes you feel itchy, sad, frumpy, or annoyed. Get rid of anything that doesn’t reflect the woman you are, or the woman you are becoming. Get rid of anything that’s sending a negative or disempowering message to you. Get rid of those “skinny jeans” from when you were 18 years old. Get rid of those “fat pants” that you’re keeping just in case you gain weight again. Get rid of anything that feels unappealing or draining or stressful to look at. Sell it. Donate it. Clear it out. That stuff has got to go!

Then, go shopping and invest in three outfits that feel good and fit you well at your current size. It’s better to have THREE outfits that you like… rather than a HUNDRED outfits that you don’t like.

Gradually, you can add new pieces, and you can work on creating a wardrobe that brings you joy.

Remember—your clothes send a message to you every time you wear them or see them. What kind of message do you want it to be?

BARE VICTORIES

Now we’re moving into a segment that I call BARE VICTORIES! This is where I share some posts, emails, and texts from women in my community to say CONGRATULATIONS and YAY!

Here’s the first BARE VICTORY…

Merry Christmas Eve! I got home from a church service, then we went to get hot chocolate and to drive around looking at lights. My son had a hot chocolate and I decided to get sparkling water because that’s what felt right.

I haven’t worn this top in 4 years and it fits effortlessly. All thanks to BARE. I’m so grateful this evening for every woman in this group. I hope you enjoy a happy holiday.

Here’s another victory…

I had a FB chat with a lady I’ve been acquainted with for years (we have sons who went to grade school together). I was telling her about how I’ve eliminated some toxic “friends” from my life, but it is a little lonely. She has reduced contact with some toxic people in her life too (it’s a little more complicated for her since they are family members). After going back and forth for awhile, we decided we actually have quite a bit in common–AND we are both self-described recluses. The good news is that she and I are going to be gal pals from now on, with an understanding that there will be no pressure from either side to get together in person too often. This is just what I need right now. And it gives me hope that I can rebuild my support system with friendships that are healthy and nurturing.

BARE Q&A

Today’s question come from Carol. She asks:

I understand why we would want to weed out clothes that no longer fit, but what about clothing I want to eventually wear again? I don’t want to throw those out.

Here’s my answer:

I held on to clothes that I was eventually going to wear again for a decade. It just took up space. 

The question is, when you look at that stuff in your closet, does it spark joy, or does it create anxiety or disappointment?

Every time I would look at those smaller sizes that I wasn’t getting back into, it would create irritation, frustration, and trigger negative thoughts.

So… my advice is to assess for yourself what happens when you look at these things.

Do they spark joy, yes or no?

If the answer is no, they got to go!

You can pack them up and put them in a storage bin, and come back to them later, but get them out of your closet.

BARE HERO

This is a segment where I gush about a woman I really admire. It might be a politician, an artist, an entrepreneur, or someone who’s not necessarily “famous” but who has deeply inspired me.

Today, I want to talk about Reese Witherspoon. 

I love this woman because she’s gone from being a young actress- to being a movie producer- to being a style icon (she has her own line called Draper James). She also is a light in the world for advocacy and for feminism. 

I don’t know if you have followed the Harvey Weinstein scandal, but it’s not just Harvey, there are dozens of powerful men in Hollywood and in Politics, and the world over, who are being exposed for sexual harassment and sexual assault in the workplace.

Reese has gotten together with a bunch of other famous, powerful women and they have created something called Times Up.

The tagline on Times Up is, “The clock has run out on sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace. It’s time to do something about it.”

Basically, it’s an organization in solidarity. These women have come together with their power and their money, to put together a fund for women who can’t afford it and have been afraid to speak up in the past, to help them cover legal expenses if they want to fight sexism in the workplace.

I am SO fired up about this. It is so inspiring to me. I really feel like 2018, time is up. TIME’S UP, mo’fo’s we’re coming for ya!!

I want you to declutter your closet! If that’s too overwhelming, then start with something small, like your sock drawer or underwear drawer.

Get rid of anything that makes you feel itchy, sad, frumpy, or annoyed. Get rid of anything that doesn’t reflect the woman you are, or the woman you are becoming. Get rid of anything that’s sending a negative message to you. Byeeeeee! Out it goes! You will feel so much better once you’ve cleared that stale energy out of your closet and out of your life.
