Welcome to the Rich Coach Club, the podcast that teaches you how to build your dream coaching practice and how to significantly increase your income. If you’re a coach and you’re determined to start making more money, this show is for you. I’m master certified life coach Susan Hyatt, and I’m psyched for you to join me on this journey.
Train running in the woods, taking a quiet moment with my hot tea, watching one of my favorite Netflix binges like Tiny Little Fires, quality time with my husband and kids, putting on my gold sparkly workout leggings, texting with my friends and laughing hysterically about the latest ridiculous meme that someone shared.
Those are just a few of the things that bring me absolute joy. And guess what, people? Joy makes you rich. When you build more joy into your workday, you become smarter, more creative, you come up with better ideas, and you make more money.
For all y’all skeptics out there, alright, hear me out. There is science behind this and I’ll walk you through the science in just a minute. Today’s episode is all about joy and what perfect timing, right? Because couldn’t we all use a little more joy in our lives right now? We’re going to talk about the science of joy, your brain on joy, and why joy is a crucial and very overlooked part of your business plan. Here we go.
We’re starting with a segment that I call your two-minute pep talk. A dose of positivity, motivation, and smart ideas to get your week started off right. Okay booberry, so what’s a typical workday for you? Do you reach for your phone and start scrolling and checking texts or reading stressful news even before you get out of bed?
Hey listen, that was me back in my real estate agent days. I was practically glued to my phone and it was not cute. Do you chain yourself to your desk eight hours in a row and barely allow yourself any breaks? If I had a spy cam set up inside your office, your home, wherever you work, would I see a joyful workday or would I see a brutal joyless grind?
Many coaches don’t realize or don’t believe that there’s a direct connection between the amount of joy in your life and the amount of money you make. I continually tell my clients, build more joy into that workday and you’ll start making more money. But I’m often met with skepticism, resistance, lots of excuses about why this just is not possible. So let me lay some science on you and let’s burn the skepticism away once and for all. Here’s how it works.
We feel joy. Our bodies experience a release of dopamine and serotonin. Two very important neurotransmitters. Dopamine is gold for coaches, consultants, entrepreneurs, writers, anyone who runs a business or does creative work of any kind. Dopamine boosts creativity. It helps you concentrate. It makes you feel more motivated and basically everything you need for a super-powered workday.
If you’re facing a tough problem like how can I make 30K this month so I can pay my bills and pay my team, even during a pandemic, well, you definitely want plenty of dopamine to spike your creativity so you can come up with a high-quality solution to that problem. Lord, I know I need every drop of dopamine I can get.
And like I mentioned earlier, serotonin is another neurotransmitter that’s released when we experience joy. Serotonin does all kinds of important things for your body, including stabilizing your mood so you feel less anxious, less depressed, more positive.
Serotonin is like optimism juice. And lately, even more than usual, I need my optimism juice in a venti sized cup. I bet you do too. In my Bold program for girls and teens, that’s my program to help girls become strong, powerful, confident, mentally and physically healthy, we dedicate one whole week to joy.
We encourage girls to find small ways to build joy into their daily routine because this has such a powerful effect on their mood and energy levels. And it’s true for girls, and of course, it’s equally true for grownup women too.
Joy is a crucial part of your mental health, physical health, and financial health too. So here’s your assignment for today. Write down 10 ways you can bring a little more joy into your workday. Even if you’re staying home due to the pandemic, I hope you actually are social distancing.
Even if your kids are running around and it’s total pandemonium, I’ve been there, even if you have limited financial resources right now or limited time or limited anything, even with all your current circumstances, whatever they may be, how can you find joy, create joy, make room for joy in your life?
Make a list, 10 ideas. They can be very small. Things you could realistically do every day or nearly every day. Okay, so I’ll kick things off. Here are some things that bring me joy. So lately, being at home amidst the pandemic, I recently hosted a live DJ dance party on Facebook and it was so fun to get all dressed up, put on sequins, makeup, do my hair.
And the silver fox put on a tux and we danced all around our living room. That was super fun. We also recently celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary and we went on a beautiful hike. We took a long drive, went to a remote location in Hoosier National Forest and went for a hike.
But we typically hike weekly and that brings me a lot of joy. I recently, you guys – and I’m going to have probably a ton of blog posts about this. I used to tell myself I had a black thumb. It turns out you really just need to give a crap about plants and you can take care of them too.
But what’s been bringing me a lot of joy are beautiful house plants that are thriving. My backyard, my hammock. Right before I recorded this podcast, I finished teaching a class to my Bare master coaches in training, and I took a break to walk around my yard, look at the flowers we just planted, hang out my hammock for five minutes in the sun. Brought me a tremendous amount of joy.
My pets bring me a lot of joy. Start incorporating more of these simple joys into your day and watch what happens to your mood, your creativity, your ability to work effectively and make that money.
So post your joy list inside the Facebook group for Rich Coach Club. Do it today and everybody who posts their joy list, I’m going to put you into a prize drawing to win something fabulous and all of you know who are inside Rich Coach Club, I give away great gifts.
So I want everyone to do this so we can get inspired by each other’s joy lists. And if you’re not a member of that group yet, join us. It takes five seconds to join. It’s free. And I promise you’ll love it.
The next time you feel stuck, frustrated, pessimistic about something that’s going on with your business, remember, the answer is not buckling down, grinding it out, gritting your teeth, slogging through it. The answer is joy. Joy boosts your brain. Joy unlocks your best ideas, and joy makes you rich. Pep talk complete.

One more quick thing for today. We’ve been talking about joy and why it’s so important to incorporate joy into your workday. And how this enhances your brain and your ability to make money. But let’s be clear. When I say build joy into your workday, I am not talking about binge-watching Netflix for hours, scrolling mindlessly on Instagram, or eating and entire tray of brownies instead of doing your work.
There’s a big difference between taking a joy break versus avoiding your work, procrastinating, hiding, or numbing out. Taking a 15-minute walk outside while listening to inspiring music, that’s a joy break. Scrolling on your phone until your eyes are drooping, that’s probably not.
Sitting in your favorite chair and savoring some hot tea and a beautiful homemade cookie, that’s a joy break. Pouring chips into your mouth while you watch TV and barely even chew or taste them, that’s not. A true joy break or what I call a pleasure break is a break that boosts your energy levels, boosts your creativity, makes you feel inspired, enhanced, uplifted.
Joy lifts you. If you’re not experiencing that, then you’re not experiencing joy. So keep it real with yourself. A good question is will this bring me energy or drain my energy? Will this leave me feeling inspired or numbed out? Those questions will set you in the right direction. You want real joy. Not an artificial substitute that just leaves you feeling crappy. You want the real thing.
Thank you for listening to today’s episode. I hope I’ve thoroughly convinced you that joy is a crucial part of your business plan. Joy makes you feel emotionally rich, and when you feel emotionally rich, then it’s a whole lot easier to become financially rich too.
Like I often say, you’ve got to feel rich to get rich. And yes, you can create joy in your day, even amidst the pandemic and all the unusual circumstances we’re facing. It might be a dance party in your kitchen, a movie night in your living room, a special breakfast in your backyard, or the simple joy of snuggling under a pile of fresh sheets and blankets.
Just did that last night. Find joy wherever you are. This is not frivolous. It’s very wise for your business. Have a beautiful week and I’ll see you next time.
