Welcome to the Rich Coach Club, the podcast that teaches you how to build your dream coaching practice and how to significantly increase your income. If you’re a coach and you’re determined to start making more money, this show is for you. I’m master certified life coach Susan Hyatt, and I’m psyched for you to join me on this journey.
Hey coaches. Question for you, are you running a business or are you leading a movement? Hopefully, your answer is both. As a coach, you need to be emotionally invested in your work and you need to be passionate.
You need to care deeply about what you’re doing, which means you need a mission, a cause. Something that gets you out of bed in the morning. Something that makes you feel excited to get up and get to work.
In other words, you need a movement. So what’s your movement? If you’re not totally sure, this episode might help you figure it out with 2020 right around the corner. There’s no better moment to find your movement. Let’s go.
As always, we’re starting with a segment that I call your two-minute pep talk, and let’s face it, real talk, sometimes it’s 10 minutes. But this is the part of the show where I share some motivation and encouragement to get your week started off right. And I try to keep things to two minutes or less.
First things first, when I say movement, what does that even mean? Well, here’s how I define it. A movement is a particular kind of change that you want to see in the world. You want to play an active role in creating this change and you want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. You want to move things forward.
For me, I’d say my movement is all about helping women feel confident, powerful, and strong. Physically strong, mentally strong, financially strong. Strong in all realms of life. Strong enough to stand up to bullies, strong enough to become CEO or senator or president or whatever you want to be.
As a coach, your movement might be similar to mine, or your movement might be really different. Here are some questions for you. Questions that might help you figure out what your movement is all about.
What’s something you see in the world that frustrates the heck out of you? Or something that just breaks your heart? What’s something that you see out in the world that is simply not acceptable? Something that needs to change ASAP?
If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about your country or your city, what would it be? What’s something that has changed your life in a positive way? Something that could help a lot of other people too? What’s something you absolutely believe can improve people’s lives?
What’s something you wish people would stop doing? What’s something you wish people would start doing? What’s something you want to see eradicated within your lifetime?
Those questions might unlock some ideas. For instance, you might realize, it really frustrates me when I see people staring at their phones instead of looking up and talking to each other. Everyone is so phone-addicted, it drives me nuts. This might be a clue.
Maybe as a coach, your movement is all about inspiring people to unplug from their devices and plug back into life. Or you might realize, it breaks my heart that women of color typically get paid so much less than white women and men. Okay, this might be a clue.
Maybe as a coach, you want to specialize in financial coaching, and your movement is all about helping women of color to earn more than they’ve ever earned before in history. By figuring out what frustrates you, you can discover your movement and the change you want to create in the world.
And you know what? It’s okay if you have more than one movement. You don’t need to lock yourself into a tight box. If you have numerous passions and interests, cool. Me too. However, it’s very powerful to choose one primary movement that’s going to receive the majority of your attention right now.
One big movement, one main focus, one main dish. And then sure, maybe you have a couple of secondary movements as well. Side dishes. Bottom line, find something that frustrates you and commit to making it better. Pledge that you’re going to use your voice and your skills to improve this situation. That is your movement. This has been your pep talk for the week. Pep talk complete.
Now we’re moving into the part of the show where I give shout-outs to you. Shout-outs to listeners and clients and all the wonderful people in my business community. And today, I want to give a shout-out to Sam. Now Sam did something a little different. She recommended me on an Instagram post where someone posted the question, “Hey, tell me podcasts I should be listening to.”
And Sam posted, “Susan Hyatt of Rick Coach Club, and I’m not even a coach. She’s just super inspiring and has lots of great business advice.” Sam, I can’t thank you enough. It means so much to me that you took the time out of your day to post on someone else’s Instagram, a recommendation to listen to Rich Coach Club.
And hey, if you have something to say about this show, go ahead and tag me on social media, send an email to [email protected], or post a five-star review wherever you listen to podcasts. Maybe it’s iTunes, maybe it’s Stitcher, maybe it’s Spotify.
Tag me, let me know about your review, and you might hear your name on a future episode. I love giving shout-outs to people in my community, so holler at me. Thank you for the love. I love you right back.
So even when you’ve got a movement that you really care about, some days you just lose your mojo. You get tired or discouraged and this is why it’s so important to have something that helps you reconnect with your movement. Something that brings that fire back into your heart. Something that reminds you this is why I’m doing all this work.
For instance, a couple of years ago, I got a Facebook message from a transgender teenager who lives in the deep south. And I got this message shortly after Trump was elected. And this teen wrote to me and said, “I’ve been feeling so anxious lately, especially with Trump becoming president. It feels like the USA is not a safe place for someone like me, but seeing you, Susan Hyatt, and how confident and outspoken you are makes me feel stronger too.”
And I’m paraphrasing the message to make it a little shorter, but basically, that’s the gist of it. And I was so touched to receive this message, I read it like, 5000 times, and I kept it for years. When I feel myself sinking into a slump, I read that message again and other messages I’ve received over the years, and by taking just a few moments to read messages like those, it shifts my mood.
So I encourage you to find something that helps you stay fired up about your movement. It might be a letter from a teenager that you pin to your bulletin board. It might be a photo of you and a classroom full of students that you’ve mentored. It might be a statue, a painting, a poster, or a special email that you print out and keep on your desk in a frame.
A photo of one of your heroes, or a photo of your own kids. Find something that can be your touchstone for moments like these when your fire starts to dwindle. Keep your touchstone close by. This makes such a difference.
Thank you for listening to today’s episode, and I hope you’re feeling inspired to find your movement and the change that you want to create in the world. And if you already feel really clear about your movement, yes, keep going. Maybe today’s episode inspired you to vocalize your movement and talk about it publicly, even more than you already do.
Crank up that volume, boo. Oh, and lastly, if you’re thinking to yourself, “I love coaching. And I care about changing the world, but how do I actually make money doing this? How do I run a coaching business that’s an actual business and not a volunteer project?” If that’s on your mind, I have got several ways to help you out.
